Mumbaikars have overtaken Delhiites in chatting and SMSing. For the first time, the average mobile bill in Mumbai of Rs 475.68 has exceeded Delhi’s average of Rs 459.32 during the quarter July-September 2006.
According to data compiled by the Cellular Operators’ Association of India (COAI), the mobile bill per subscriber per month in Mumbai rose 10 percent in the quarter ended September 2006 from Rs 430.97 in the previous quarter (April-June 2006). Delhi, on the other hand, witnessed a 1.3 percent decline in its average mobile spend per month in the July-September period, against Rs 465.51 in the quarter April-June 2006.
In terms of subscribers in the GSM space, Delhi continues to lead with over 7.2 million customers as of November-end, when compared to a little over 6.3 million for Mumbai. Amongst the metros, Chennai continues to maintain its third position, with average mobile bills per month of Rs 403.89, a growth of 1.36 percent over Rs 398.48 in the previous quarter (April-June). Kolkata, however, has witnessed a decline in its average mobile spends, from Rs 355.91 in April-June period to Rs 338.25 in the last quarter, a dip of 4.96 percent.
