The Indian cell phone mart is getting smarter by the year. In 2006, India witnessed sales of 65 million handsets, doubling from the 32 million mark reached in 2005. Par for the course one may say, but the interesting development is that smartphones have contributed 4 percent to those numbers.
Considering that smartphones are those, which integrates PDA functionality with voice and texting and keeping in mind that these cost upwards of Rs 20,000, a picture of a maturing market emerges.
Industry experts believe the number of smartphones sold in the country could double this year, considering the rate of growth.
Since smartphones offer PDA-like capabilities, high-end cameras, Internet access and navigation software it’s today a businessman’s best friend. So much so, the non-smart phones are today called ‘dumb-phones’.
