The much talked about third generation wireless (3G) services may finally enter India through Vodafone. With Vodafone almost set to win the battle to take over India’s fourth largest mobile telephony company, Hutchison Essar, the 3G launch in India is likely to be hastened.
3G is short for third-generation technology The services associated with 3G provide the ability to transfer simultaneously both voice data (a telephone call) and non-voice data (such as downloading information, exchanging e-mail, and instant messaging). In marketing 3G services, video telephony has often been used as the killer application for 3G. Worldwide roll-out of 3G networks was delayed in some countries by the enormous costs of additional spectrum licensing fees. Analysts tracking the sector say Vodafone’s expertise in 3G services will create a new dimension to Indian telephony “However, it will be subjected to the Department of Telecom’s directions and availability of spectrum,” an analyst said. Vodafone’s 3G subscriber base stood at 10 million during the October-December quarter.
