Cellular operators are demanding an additional band of spectrum for third generation (3G) service, saying the 2.5-2.69 Ghz is the most acceptable extension band for it. At present, 2.1 Ghz band (as suggested by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India) is being vacated for 3G in India. There are concerns that this band may not be fully available, and that only around 2×25 Mhz can be made available in the near future.
The maximum availability in the band provided is only 2×60 Mhz, which is not sufficient to meet the 3G requirements, given the competition, the Cellular Operators Association of India wrote to communications minister Dayanidhi Maran.
