Mobile device development is moving in the direction of supporting higher display resolutions and more versatile uses of the device’s display. Display evolution is driven by new uses and applications, such as the rising popularity of browsing Web pages on a mobile device. Map services and location-based use of the mobile device is another example of an important future application.
These trends create new demands for the use of the available display space. The issues are not simply the resolution or the physical size of the display — they also involve the orientation of the display. Some applications simply work better on a horizontal landscape display. Making sure that the application design uses the display in an optimal manner boosts the positive experience for the end user.
This document provides an introduction to the S60 scalable UI and offers guidelines for developing scalable S60 applications. In the S60 platform, UI scalability means the application’s ability to adjust to different display resolutions and orientations. Although the mainstream display on the latest S60 devices is the QVGA-sized portrait display, there are several other supported combinations as well.
