The revenue from mobile value added services (VAS) is expected to grow more than 60 percent this fiscal to reach Rs 4,600 crore from Rs 2,800 crore last year, according to a study.
In 2006-07, VAS contributed only 9 percent toward the mobile operators’ revenue. This is expected to grow up to 18 percent by 2010, the study by industry body Assocham and consulting firm Ernst & Young said.
Such services include ring tones, non-voice advanced messaging services such as SMS, MMS as well as voice-based services such as push-to-talk.
India has 220 million mobile users, and the number is expected to touch 500 million by 2010. The study also expected that home entertainment revenues, combining DVD/VCD revenues along with digital pay television platforms and broadcasting rights will contribute up to 45 percent of the total revenues of films.
