Qatar’s new Unlimited Mobile Broadband plan has become one of the most popular service launches in Qtel’s history, with more customers subscribing in the first week of availability than in the entire month of February 2008, contrasting year-on-year sales.
Queues formed outside stores in Doha early from Tuesday morning with the launch of the new service, and this weekend saw record sales in major outlets, particularly Qtel’s leading concept stores in Villagio and Landmark Mall.
With new sales reaching a historic peak on Saturday 14 March, Qtel believe that the success of the Unlimited Plan will provide an important step forward in the “Broadband Qatar” strategy, which will position Qatar with some the highest rate of per capita users of Broadband not just in the region, but the world.
The service, which offers unlimited access and unlimited downloads for a fixed monthly fee, has struck a major chord with users within Qatar, with the offer of a free Qtel E180 USB modem for 12-month subscribers proving particularly popular.
Adel Al Mutawa, executive director, group communications, Qtel, said: “We designed this new Unlimited Plan based on an extensive research program with our customers, so we were confident that there was strong market demand for it. However, the immediate response has exceeded our expectations, reflecting the incredible demand for advanced technology that exists in Qatar.”
Qtel has developed an extensive campaign to support the roll-out of the new Unlimited Mobile Broadband plan, working with a range of retailers including Starlink, Jumbo, PC One and Virgin Megastores to ensure availability across the country.
Qatar deploys the latest 3.75G technology for its Broadband service, supporting a high-speed experience with download speeds (HSDPA) of up to 7.2 mbps and upload speeds (HSUPA) up to 2 mbps. With such a strong network backbone, Broadband is increasingly becoming a core entertainment and business service within the country.
Qtel has a range of service improvements planned for the first half of 2009, reflecting its response to strong local demand. The company is also strengthening the network infrastructure, to ensure that high levels of reliability and redundancy remain even as the network becomes faster and more affordable.
