According to a spectrum committee report by DoT, the mobile user base in India is expected to be 1 billion by the year 2014. In 2014, India’s population is expected to be 1.26 billion, with mobile penetration of 1.01 billion the mobile teledensity would be 80% above. It would mean 8 out of every 10 Indians will have access to a mobile device.
Initially there were only two operators in each circle in 1995 whereas now there are about 12 – 13 operators in each circle. CurrentlyIndia adds about 8 – 10 million moblile phone subscribers per month. This shows that the Indian Mobile market has grown a lot in the past thirteen to fourteen years.
However, to achieve this 1 bilion mark it is absolutely essential to redefine spectrum allocation and pricing policies, conduct early 3G auctions and review the M&A norms.
