The Middle East’s number one job site has launched a mobile version of its website, which will enable job seekers to access the Bayt.com website on their mobile devices, while on the move. Job seekers can simply enter m.bayt.com into the web browser of their mobile device, then instantly search all of the jobs that are currently available on the main Bayt.com site.

Bayt.com mobile, which went live on September 6, is the first such mobile job site to be launched in the Middle East that specifically designed for the region’s job.

As part of Bayt.com mobile, job seekers will be able to apply from their device to any of the listed jobs that are of interest to them on the site, simply by using their stored CVs, and adding a cover note if required.

The emergence of collaborative Web 2.0 applications including social networking, user-generated content, location-based services and instant messaging will galvanize the mobile web according to a new report issued by market research firm Juniper Research, which forecasts the number of mobile web users will grow from 577 million in 2008 to more than 1.7 billion in 2013. Juniper also credits expanded 2.5/3G penetration as a catalyst for mobile web uptake, but argues that mobile operators and handset makers will have to adapt their commercial strategies to accommodate greater collaboration with other segments of the value chain if its growth projections are to become a reality.
Additional findings from the Juniper report:
- The Far East & China will represent the largest market for mobile web use, topping 415 million users by 2013, up from a year-end 2008 total of 190 million.
- The greatest potential for mobile web adoption lies in South America, while growth opportunities in markets like Western and Eastern Europe (which enjoy greater fixed broadband penetration) are more limited.
- A number of mobile Web 2.0 applications will hinge on flat-data or even free pricing, meaning industry players must seek new revenue streams.

LinkedIn, a network of 19 million professionals, has launched the mobile version of its site available at m.linkedin.com from mobile Internet browsers. The service supports the iPhone, the iPod touch, Blackberries, and other phones. The beta release, announced by the company is available in English, French, German, Spanish, Japanese and Chinese. Members will be able to search profiles and bio information; research contacts they may have in common with other professionals; invite people to join networks; and receive updates about connections. A final version is expected later this year.

New Delhi Television Ltd (NDTV) has launched India’s first full service mobile channel ‘NDTV Active’ in collaboration with July Systems, a company that provides mobile solutions.

The free service, including video alerts, can be customized by users and is available to subscribers on all mobile networks in India, although they may have to pay separate SMS (short messaging service) or GPRS (a high-speed data transmission service) charges to the concerned telecom company.

Whrrl is a new mobile network that lets you aggregate information as you visit different places in life. It’s generally like a location review service that’s wrapped up in a map mashup and a social network.

If you’re on the north side of town and you’d like to find a restaurant or a local museum, you can access whrrl on your mobile and do a search based on your location. From there you can filter search results based on ratings, users, activity type, price, hours of operation, distance and neighborhood.

If you go to a location and would like to review it, you can “check in” and write your review (this is in a wiki format), give it a rating, and this is all incorporated into the Whrrl database for other users’ benefit. Add some images if you’d like. People like to look at pictures. Locations can also be bookmarked, so you can check them out the next time you’re on that side of town. If you’d really like to be kept up to date with what’s going on around you, check out your newsfeed. This consists of activity going on with your friends.

Currently, whrrl supports AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile customers in the USA, on about 10 phone models. There will also be plans for charging mobile users for use of its location-based service.
