Samsung Electronics announced the launch of BADA, a new open mobile platform promising developers the tools to create applications optimized for millions of devices across the handset maker’s smartphone portfolio. According to Samsung, bada–which translates to “ocean” in Korean–draws on the company’s experience in building proprietary platforms, guaranteeing a developer-friendly environment emphasizing the creation of web-based applications. Samsung also touts bada’s user interface, which it says can be transferred into a sophisticated UI design for developers.
Samsung offered few additional specifics on bada, but said the new platform will tie directly to its Samsung Application Store, which opened in September. Samsung said it will release the bada software development kit in December in conjunction with an official launch event taking place in London.

It’s amazing what can happen in one year. Before Apple launched the iTunes App store, there was no such thing as the “mobile app store economy.” It was limited to a few vendors such as Handango, who controlled the small mobile software distribution market.
Now, most mobile operating systems have their own app store, and phone manufacturers are attempting to open stores with their own devices in mind. Samsung earlier announced it will launch an on-device smartphone app store in Europe on September 14. The company has already put up a placeholder for its app store, and downloads will be available to the Omnia and the I8910 HD. Samsung says support will be added on the Omnia II and OmniaLITE at a later date.
Have come to know from my sources, Samsung is planning to launch the India appstore on 14th September as well. Is it going to be as successful as Apple’s itunes store ?
As for the App Store, the Samsung Store will initially offer 300 applications with the number increasing to 2000 by year-end. From Samsungapps.com users would soon be able to purchase applications by credit card. There will also be an option to buy them over the air with the charges being credited to the user’s phone bill. Another option that will be offered is an inbuilt application on the phones that would enable downloads over Wi-Fi/GPRS/3G.
