Google announced a mobile version of its Google Gears browser extension software, promising developers the tools for storing web application data on mobile devices. Initially released for Internet Explorer on Windows Mobile 5 and 6, Google Gears provides developers with tools to store data from browser-based applications so those apps can be run even when no network signal is available, at the same time reducing data charges by restricting traffic between the device and the operator. Google adds the ultimate goal of Google Gears is to create a standard, web-based mobile platform requiring developers to write applications only once for deployment across multiple mobile operating systems.

Non iPhone users will soon be able to browse the web on a mobile device as they would on a home computer. The SkyFire browser, already tipped to be one of the most important mobile software releases of the year, supports Flash video, Java and Quicktime, and features a manageable interface to make pages more readable on the small screen. Most importantly though, SkyFire claims that its software offers desktop browsing speeds on a handheld, with no restrictions over media content display and accessibility.

The local arm of Microsoft Corp. announced the India launch of Windows Mobile 6, its operating system for smart phones.India had a mobile (telephony) subscriber base in excess of 170 million on 30 June. This number is set to increase to 500 million by 2010, according to the department of telecommunications. And according to research firm IDC, 3.06 million smart phones were sold in India last year. A smart phone is one that can access email and perform basic computing tasks such as reading a spreadsheet.

The software competes with Canadian firm Research In Motion Ltd’s (RIM) BlackBerry software (and devices).

There’s a new web browser that has been launched for Windows Mobile that goes by the name Deepfish. Microsoft has unveiled this new mobile technology, called Deepfish, designed to offer mobile users quick and convenient Web browsing that more closely resembles the experience of browsing the Web on desktop computers.

Mercora tie up with Microsoft to promote its streaming music service for smart phones, called M.Mercora M is compatible with Windows Mobile 5.0 Smartphones and PocketPC phones.

The service offers more than 100,000 channels of music for streaming directly to any Windows Mobile 5 or 6 phone, and has added more than 7,000 podcast channels.

Microsoft will offer M as a free six-month subscription to all Windows Mobile users. The application can be downloaded from the Windows Mobile site directly to phones.

Yahoo! has expanded its Yahoo! Go 2.0 internet platform to Windows Mobile devices, claiming the service will be supported by 175 different mobile models.

Yahoo! has also teamed up with Windows Mobile smartphone manufacturer High Tech Computer (HTC) to preload and distribute the Go for Mobile 2.0 on HTC devices. Yahoo! oneSearch will also be included.

Some Windows Mobile devices sold in the coming months will have a software bonus on board. Opera, a free browser with a popular mobile version, will be shipped along with Windows Mobile on some devices from Motorola, HTC Asus, and Toshiba. It’s not that Internet Explorer will be missing from these devices, but that certain users will be able to choose from two browsers on their devices. Why the additional browser choice? According to Opera staff, it’s because the vendors want users of their more expensive devices to have a very good Internet experience–something that the speed-optimized Opera Mini may well deliver.

The iPhone competitor from LG, the Prada (also known as the KE850), was spotted running the latest Windows Mobile 6.0 operating system recently.

This means LG is cozying up with Microsoft, being the third in line after Samsung and Motorola to sell Windows Mobile-powered handsets.
