Despite the economic downturn, it is expected that the latest mobile applications for smartphones like BlackBerry and iPhone will drive industry growth in the coming years, providing alternate sources of revenue for operators.

A new report by Juniper Research forecasts that smartphones will account for 23% of all new handsets sold by 2013 (Cellular News). Another report by Informa forecasts 35 percent growth in sold smartphones in 2009 and according to The Washington Post, Gartner expects smartphone sales to jump in 2009.

The common element in these reports is the potential that innovative devices and applications have to promote mobile data consumption. This has industry players scrambling to secure their place in the value chain, including content providers, handset vendors and application developers.
Handset vendors need to diversify into high-value content to offset falling margins on handset sales. On the side of content providers, Facebook is reported to be in talks with a number of mobile phone manufacturers to more tightly embed access to its services within the phone menus. RIM, who is launching BlackBerry App World later this month; Microsoft announced at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona the launch of Windows Mobile marketplace, which will allow developers to build and sell Windows Mobile applications. Both will compete head to head with Apple’s AppStore

Google announced a mobile version of its Google Gears browser extension software, promising developers the tools for storing web application data on mobile devices. Initially released for Internet Explorer on Windows Mobile 5 and 6, Google Gears provides developers with tools to store data from browser-based applications so those apps can be run even when no network signal is available, at the same time reducing data charges by restricting traffic between the device and the operator. Google adds the ultimate goal of Google Gears is to create a standard, web-based mobile platform requiring developers to write applications only once for deployment across multiple mobile operating systems.

Non iPhone users will soon be able to browse the web on a mobile device as they would on a home computer. The SkyFire browser, already tipped to be one of the most important mobile software releases of the year, supports Flash video, Java and Quicktime, and features a manageable interface to make pages more readable on the small screen. Most importantly though, SkyFire claims that its software offers desktop browsing speeds on a handheld, with no restrictions over media content display and accessibility.

Here is the video for demo. Turn on your speakers. This is cool.

Some Windows Mobile devices sold in the coming months will have a software bonus on board. Opera, a free browser with a popular mobile version, will be shipped along with Windows Mobile on some devices from Motorola, HTC Asus, and Toshiba. It’s not that Internet Explorer will be missing from these devices, but that certain users will be able to choose from two browsers on their devices. Why the additional browser choice? According to Opera staff, it’s because the vendors want users of their more expensive devices to have a very good Internet experience–something that the speed-optimized Opera Mini may well deliver.
